Heartthrob Cookie Dough

(Valentine Cookie)

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup shortening
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 egg
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract

  1. Stir together flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
  2. Beat sugar and shortening with an electric mixer til fluffy.
  3. Add remaining ingredients; beat well. Add flour mixture; beat well.
  4. Tint and shape as directed for each cookie variation.

Baking Directions:
Place cookies on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in a 375-degree oven 8 to 10 minutes or till golden.

Remove: Cool on a wire rack.

Inside-Out Cookies
Divide 1 dough recipe in half. To 1/2, mix in 10 drops red food coloring. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough, one color at a time, 1/4-inch thick. Cut with different-size heart-shape cookie cutters. Using a smaller cookie cutter, cut hears from the center of each cookie. Remove smaller hearts and interchange them so that cookies have a contrasting colored heart in the center. Rereoll dough scraps and repeat. Bake as directed. Makes about 30 (2 to 3-inch) cookies. Reserve scraps for Bleeding Heart Cookies.

Makes 30.

Bleeding Heart Cookies:
So simple – just the dough scraps.

Mix dough scraps lightly with your hands so dough looks marbled. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough 1/4-inch thick. Cut with 2-inch heart-shaped cutter. Bake as directed.
