Rain Gauge

Rain Gauge

Keep track of how much rain you’re getting at your house. Make your own rain gauge! This is a wonderful project for scouts or gifts.
NOT FOR EATING

Empty 3-liter plastic bottle (rinse and remove label)
Assorted permanent markers (paint markers work best)

Parent:

  1. Cut off the top of the bottle approximately 9 inches from the base.

Child:

  1. Draw a pattern for a picture. Insert pattern into bottle. Locate picture where you want it.*
  2. Trace over the picture on outside of the bottle with a paint marker.
  3. Remove paper pattern and paint.
  4. On the opposite side, measure one inch from the bottom of the base, making a scale using a ruler, 1 inch to 8 inches.
  5. Invert the top of the bottle and place inside the bottle base. Tape.
  6. Set rain gauge on a flat surface and see how much rain it catches.

*Note: Place drawing on poster board. Place in a plastic bag. It will curve to the shape of the base. Tape to draw.
